We believe that poverty and corruption are not a fatality and that a quality education should not be solely reserved for an elite. Our aim is to prepare future leaders who will be able to take charge of their country’s progress following moral and ethical frameworks. The Lycée MLK aims to become an institution of excellency in Burkina Faso and hopes to promote integration and success of children from all social backgrounds. Social diversity is thus a necessity.
In Burkina Faso, 88% of children in age of being in 6th grade are not schooled, often abandoning their studies due to a lack of financial means and to help their parents. It is these children from isolated villages who are the first affected. Furthermore, there are in average a hundred students per class, with unsuitable and often lacking equipment, and schools are not always close to villages. Some children have to walk several kilometers each day.
This is why we have made it a point for this social class to be decently represented within the Lycée, and to benefit from an opportunity to reach excellence and academic success. We have visited all the neighboring region of the Central Plateau, and have selected the best and most motivated students from the villages there. The selection is based on an academic abilities test and on an interview to evaluate the student’s motivation.
In addition, in order to sensitize parents and include them in their children’s education effort, we ask them to contribute in nature (cereals, nuts, leaves…). All sponsored students live in the boarding school.
